Facebook profile images are scaled at 32% to create the small versions that end up in the stream. Or, from the other direction, scale your desired 50 x 50 image up by 312.5% to generate the full-size image.

A 58-pixel image is cropped to 50-pixels when shown in the stream. I.e., 86.2% of the image is “live.”
